What Happens in Chainsaw Man Manga Chapter 34 (Summary)
Denji is attacked by one of Santa Claus’s puppet bodies — a human-shaped vessel controlled remotely that moves with unnatural jerking motion and is not affected by pain or fear because it is not actually alive. The attack comes without warning in a public area, and the chapter establishes immediately why Santa Claus is so dangerous: the puppets are everywhere and indistinguishable from humans until they move. There is no way to see them coming until they are already on you.
Denji fights the puppet and destroys it, but more arrive. He is not fighting one opponent — he is fighting what appears to be an unlimited supply of bodies that can be sacrificed without consequence to the person controlling them. Other Division 4 members are attacked simultaneously, spreading the team across the city and preventing them from consolidating. It is coordinated and intelligent, clearly designed to isolate and overwhelm rather than confront directly.
The chapter also shows Santa Claus’s actual form — an older European woman who makes contracts with individual humans, turning them into puppet vessels she can inhabit and detonate. She has been building a network of puppets for months prior to activation and the scope of her preparation is genuinely alarming. Makima receives the intelligence on Santa Claus and for the first time in the series reacts with something that might be actual concern, though it is difficult to tell with her.
